Tobacco Store Display

A tobacco store display built for a retailer in Canada in 2023, produced as a black shelving wall with a black glass counter run in front. The store’s brief was to make the product look considered rather than cheap, and the answer was a single dark field with light only where the product sits.

The wall is full height in black, with the shelf decks set deep enough to hold boxed stock and a lit reveal down each division. Lighting is concealed at the rear of each shelf, so the wall glows without a visible source — the detail that separates a display wall from a painted wall.

The counter is a black glass case on a black carcass with a green LED toe-kick that runs the full length of the run. The green line is the only colour in the elevation and it does the work of a base detail: it lifts the case and hides the cable route.

Because both elements are the same colour, the joint between wall and counter disappears and the store reads as one volume. That is cheaper than adding a feature and more effective.

Production followed the standard factory path: approved drawings, a sample bay with its lit reveal, custom casework in thirty to forty-five days, flat-packed from Guangzhou, and spare shelf pins and a driver with the consignment.
